Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
We plan, design and guide the delivery of outdoor spaces, big and small, from early ideas through to construction. Our work considers much more than planting alone. We look at the full picture like circulation, accessibility, drainage, grading, planting, built elements, walls, materials, privacy, visitor experience, operational needs and maintenance. We solve problems for our clients, and make things look good while doing so! See our work here.(/private)
At LINEA we are landscape architects, which means we’re formally trained and qualified (usually with a 5 years postgraduate degree and a professional registration) to design and deliver complex projects - including technical aspects of design such as levels, drainage, approvals and construction documentation. We don’t just design how a space looks, we coordinate with engineers, councils and contractors to make sure it’s approved and delivered properly. Landscape designers can certainly be a good fit for smaller or simpler projects, but if you're not sure, send us an email an(/contact)d we can have a chat about your project, and you can see some of the types of projects we've worked on here. (/public)
We work across all sorts of public and private projects, including:
• Masterplanning (for local government, commercial or real estate developers)
• Main streets and public realm upgrades (like recreation grounds, foreshores, nature-based infrastructure)
• Tourism and hospitality projects (such as hotels, cellar doors, wellness retreats)
• Land management strategies (like mixed use conservation/farming/agritourism sites)
• Residences (typically larger or more complex sites)
We are located 2.5 hours from Adelaide, on Kangaroo Island in South Australia, but we work across Australia, and internationally. Our passion is regional places, sometimes in or near townships, and sometimes very remote. We love travelling to new places so get in touch here i(/contact)f you'd like to talk about your project. Or you can see the range of places we've worked in our portfolio.
If you've been looking at a few different landscape architects, it's likely we've all got a decent portfolio, some awards up our sleeve, and some pretty pictures. Here are a few reasons that might help...
At LINEA value-for-money sits at the centre of everything we do, and not just in our services, but in what gets built. Whether it’s a high-end private escape or a tight local government upgrade, our design decisions and processes stretch your investment further.
When you work with a small team of talented and experienced designers like us at LINEA, you avoid the huge overheads and you get a hands-on and personalised approach. You won't be paying Director fees in exchange for some poor little graduate slaving away on CAD in a multi-storey inner-city building.
And finally, you might have already noticed that we live and breathe regional places. This helps us better understand our projects and our clients, like how limited contractor options and resources, change resistance in small towns and tourism seasonality can affect your project. We design to suit the place, the people and the conditions - not to chase trends or awards.
There are many good ideas and great designers out there, but not every designer is right for every client, and vice versa. These working relationships can last for months and even years on more complex projects so get in touch if you think we're a good fit for you!
The earlier the better. Our understanding of big picture thinking across a range of disciplines, connection of spaces and broader impacts means we should be engaged as early as possible. For our masterplanning services we should be one of the first consultants you engage, but we have had some cases where we're brought in as landscape architects mid-project, and can work with you to see your project through to completion from any stage!
Absolutely. Many of our projects are able to be delivered in stages, allowing you to align construction with investment, funding opportunities or evolving priorities. We provide a design package that can act as a roadmap for immediate implementation, or a longer term approach.
Our work is one of the earliest stages of funding a project. Our designs, engagement process and understanding of project delivery are an important part of funding applications, demonstrated by a successful $900,000 grant application we prepared for a small regional Council in 2025. And if you're a private developer, we create masterplans and investment packages that can help win over potential funding partners or investors for your project, complete with high level costings and phasing strategies so you and your team can run your numbers.
Like most things, you get what you pay for. We tailor our approach to suit your project, so you’re only paying for what you actually need, and without the overheads of bigger firms. For smaller consultations, design reviews or early advice, fees are typically under $3,000. More comprehensive design services - particularly masterplans or full-service projects through to construction can range from $10,000 to $50,000+, depending on complexity and scope. If you have a budget in mind, we can usually work with you to find the right starting point and create the deliverables to suit your needs.
We focus on what we do best, which is design. Although we need to know a lot about construction for our designs to work and we spend plenty of time on site, we stick to being the designer. There have certainly been moments where we've thought how much easier coordination and quality control would be if we did design and build it ourselves (!) but if you have a suitable builder in mind we can work with them, or work with you to find one in your region. Having a good contractor who can provide cost-saving solutions, good communication, quality finishes and deliver projects on time is something that we never take for granted.
We’ll usually start with a conversation to understand your project, then recommend the best way forward with no pressure to commit- whether that’s a small first step with a site visit, or a full scope. Contact us here.(/contact)
