One of a few plans drawn over the past couple of months. Some by hand on paper and scanned, and sometimes drawn in @procreate like this one. A residence currently under construction on a farm with 10/10 views, and an opportunity to add in some revegetation/planting buffers, higher amenity planting and use timber and stone from the site 🔨🪨🪵🌿

The classic and earthy look of recycled and tumbled clay pavers (clearly a studio fave from these past projects above) which are well-suited to the character of the rural settings we usually work in 🧱

But did you know that some paving patterns are stronger than others? But regardless of whether it's stretcher bond or 45° herringbone, as long as they are laid on a quality base and have a strong edge restraint, this material can stand the test of time, and even outlast concrete ♻️

Been a little bit quiet on here lately... but there's been all sorts going on behind the scenes ✍️🧤🫱🏼‍🫲🏽🤦🏼‍♀️🍃

Last week was a great little opportunity to run a workshop with around 30 local primary school kids to teach them a bit about what a landscape architect does and work with them to come up with some ideas for an outdoor space at their school that we're working on.

It was a lot of fun, and great to see their enthusiasm and engagement. Everyone seems to want mushroom stools, apparently they're learning about mushrooms at the moment 🤣🍄

Silvery blue foliage as a way of adding interest and texture year-round into a planting palette is not a new or particularly innovative concept, but a reliable one. And it works in both public and private settings.

I want to share something about being a 30-something female professional and the bias we continue to face at times when it comes to technical aspects of design/landscape architecture and how our knowledge is sometimes perceived, and ultimately questioned. Usually by middle-aged men.

Thankfully, 99.9% of men I have worked with or for (including managers, clients, consultants, contractors and stakeholders) over my 11.5 years in the public and private sector are respectful, collaborative and true legends (!!). The unskilled, opinionated and unqualified ones are usually the worst culprits.

I remember years ago I explained a drainage strategy for a large and complex development that the client refused to accept, until the male engineer repeated basically exactly what I had said (just in his male words) and all of a sudden it was a great idea.

I have asked the question before to a manager 'I don't understand, I am just doing my job, why am I seen as a threat and why won't he listen to me?'. And his response was 'unfortunately, it is because you are a smart female'.

And it's been happening again lately and as I continue to grow as a professional, I want to make sure those I mentor are prepared for the sad reality that it remains a challenge we occasionally have to face. I never claimed to be an expert at anything, but have enough experience to confidently explain what I do know, and seek expertise from specialists/experts as needed.

Landscape architects design external spaces by looking at all sorts of themes like stormwater, planting, accessibility etc but parking is almost always the favourite topic that people want to talk about (...or complain about 😆) in the public sector 🚗🚗🚗

It's always a balance between creating walkable/bikeable, practical and accessible spaces, especially in regional towns where public transport simply does not exist and the RV/caravanning sector continues to grow across the nation 🚐

From tree planting strategies to hospitality venue upgrades, mixed-use master plans, wellness retreats, main streets, rural residential sites and a few other bits and pieces, it's great to be working on a mixture of public and private projects this year 🌿⏳️

Public work (pictured) can be so rewarding, and is an opportunity to talk to many interesting people across different regions. But...(not pictured) political influence can very quickly add another dynamic and level of complexity to a public realm project 🫣🤯

When work = walking scenic and rugged coastlines 🤗🌅

Master planning involves looking at a range of themes at a high level through an understanding of what's happening on the ground. One of the things we look at is pedestrian movement, and within that, trails 👣

We look for opportunities in the master plan to better define trails, enhance connectivity, add rest spots, viewpoints and signage. Usually people are already walking the best spots and the places they want to go...🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

Why? Trail infrastructure leads to more active locals, longer stays by visitors and most importantly, a protected natural environment. People are more likely to stick to a defined trail vs making their own, and while elevated FRP or timber boardwalks are the ideal solution for accessibility and environmental protection in these kinds of coastal environments, they're often cost-prohibitive 💸💰

A real mixed bag this week in Orroroo and a bit further north for 3 projects. Perfect autumn weather but rain is needed so desperately across the state 🌧

▪️Back-to-back meetings with stakeholders, community members and council about different projects... some easy and relaxed, others a bit more 'interesting' ✔️
▪️Full moon and beautiful colours of the landscape at dawn and dusk ✔️
▪️Reservoir with water in it but paddocks as dry as they get ✔️
▪️Site setout and meeting with the client and contractors ✔️
▪️Field trip to the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Gardens with the client to pick some plants for the project ✔️
