Let's start the journal off with a good old Frequently Asked Questions post. Over the years these are some of the things we have heard or been asked. We are happy to answer any specific questions you might about what we do and how we work if you send us a message at hello@thisislinea.com.

Drawing tools for a master plan

How long does the design process usually take?

Our shorter design sessions are only a few days, our masterplans are typically turned around in a few weeks or months, and a full service design to construction administration scope can be much longer by the time you get approvals, all stakeholders involved and engage a contractor. The more people involved, the longer it takes! For a premium we may be able to fast-track your project, but that depends on our existing commitments and your ability to provide input when we need it.

Do you build the project or work with contractors?

We focus on what we do best, which is design. Although we need to know a lot about construction for our designs to work, and we spend plenty of time on site, we stick to being the designer. There have certainly been moments where we've thought how much easier coordination and quality control would be if we did design and build it ourselves (!) but if you have a suitable builder in mind we can work with them, or work with you to find one. Having a good contractor who can provide cost-saving solutions, good communication, quality finishes and deliver projects on time is something that we never take for granted.

Can you design my backyard?

Yes, we definitely can. But is it a cost-effective or necessary? That’s up to you to decide. As landscape architects and master planners we generally are engaged by clients to develop designs and plans for larger or more complex projects but we definitely have the skillset to take on smaller projects.

At what point do I need to bring in a landscape architect?

The earlier the better. Our understanding of a range of disciplines, connection of spaces and broader impacts are better to be involved in the process earlier and is an important step in an effective long term plan. We work with natural systems but also collaborate with other designers. For our masterplanning services we should be one of the first consultants you engage.

How much does it cost to work with LINEA?

Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. A guide for our fees tend to be around 15 to 20 percent of smaller project budgets, and 5 to 10 percent for larger projects, but of course it depends on whether we’re preparing a concept only, or seeing a project through to construction, and how complex the project is! If you’re a non-profit doing good things for the world then we’d love to help you out. If you’re only just starting out or your budget isn’t quite there yet, we also offer shorter design reviews and consultations on site for a smaller fee.

How do we know if LINEA is the best designer for our project?

There are many good ideas and great designers out there, but not every designer is right for every client, and vice versa. We want to make sure we’re a good fit for each other because these working relationships can last for months and even years on more complex projects. That means it’s important each party values the ideas and expertise of the other, because great outcomes are created when everyone contributes and enjoys the process.
